How can I support my child at home?
Helping your child with reading at home is one of the most valuable ways to support their learning in Year 1. Reading together every day, even for just 10 minutes, helps children build confidence, improve their vocabulary and develop a love of books.
Try to make reading a positive and enjoyable experience. Encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words using their phonics, but also talk about the story together. Ask questions such as “What do you think will happen next?” or “Who is your favourite character and why?” to help develop understanding and comprehension skills.
Children benefit from hearing stories read aloud as well as reading themselves. Sharing books, magazines, signs, recipes and bedtime stories all help children see that reading is an important part of everyday life.
Praise your child’s efforts and celebrate their progress, no matter how small. Confidence grows when children feel successful and supported. Regular reading at home will make a huge difference to your child’s learning across all areas of the curriculum.
As well as reading, we have a few options below of websites you can use to support your child in other areas of the curriculum.
